IO Interactive’s first attempt at self-publishing has been a success, with Hitman 3 selling even more than its predecessor.
The first major new release of 2021 has gone straight to the top of the UK physical sales charts, with Hitman 3 selling 17% more than Hitman 2. Given most sequels nowadays see a major decrease, due to the rise of digital sales, that counts as an important success for IO Interactive, who have only just started publishing their own games.
Interestingly, the PlayStation 5 version was the most successful, accounting for 49% of sales, compared to 27% for Xbox and 25% for PlayStation 4. That marks the first time a multiformat game has sold more on PlayStation 5 than other formats.
That’s a milestone that has come earlier than might have been expected – although that’s in part because new stock of the PlayStation 5 console became available last week, which also encouraged a 161% rise in sales for Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
