‘He’s doing nothing!’: Paul Scholes blasts Manchester United star Anthony Martial after humiliating defeat

Paul Scholes launched a scathing attack on Anthony Martial following Manchester United’s humilating defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir by accusing the Frenchman of ‘doing nothing’ during the loss.

United entered the game with a 100% record in the group, having beaten RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain in their earlier matches.

However, they clearly underestimated the Turkish club and they found themselves behind when Demba Ba captailised on some embarrassing defending to put the home side ahead.

The home side soon doubled their lead but it was halved just before half-time when Martial headed in a cross from Luke Shaw.

However, United failed to muster much of a response after the break and though it was Martial that gave the visitors a lifeline, Scholes accused the former Monaco ace of ‘doing nothing’ when his side were in possession.

Asked if he felt the players were fully committed, Scholes told BT Sport: There was an element of commitment, I just think the quality was so bad.

‘The amount of times they gave the ball away, made bad decisions, trying to beat a man.

‘Paul Pogba when he came on he was trying to beat a man, trying to hold someone off instead of passing and keep it moving.

‘The movement from the centre forwards was virtually non-existent. Anthony Martial the amount of times I looked up when a midfielder had the ball he was just stood in between the two centre halves doing nothing.

‘It was just a real lack of quality, for me, I’m trying to find a reason for it but at the end of the day I think they were in good positions, but the final bit, the quality was really, really lacking.’
