Both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw could miss Mancehster United’s Champions League clash with Villarreal on Wednesday night at Old Trafford through injury.

Both defenders were forced off during the Red Devils’ 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, with Shaw going off in the first half and Maguire after the break.

They did not appear to be serious injuries, but they could well be serious enough to keep the two England internationals sidelined for a few days.

Solskjaer could provide few details straight after the defeat at Old Trafford, but knew straight away that Wednesday night could be too soon to be picking Maguire and/or Shaw again.

‘I can’t give you any updates,’ said the United boss. ‘We’ll use tomorrow and Monday or when we get the scans done and see how they are.

‘At the moment they don’t look ok for Wednesday but let’s see.’

The loss to Aston Villa was Manchester United’s third in their last four games, now suffering defeats in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Things will be getting no easier for Solskjaer if he has to take on Villarreal without his captain and first choice left-back, although he has replacements available, with Alex Telles likely to come in for Shaw and Lindelof able to replace Maguire if required.

On bouncing back from a loss into a big European tie, Solskjaer said: ‘Every time you’re defeated, you have to stand up for yourselves, stand up for your team, fight for your team and we will.

‘The boys will. It’s a big game, a Champions League night and we know we’ve started that group badly, but we’ll be ready.’
