Apparently we’ve been washing our hair wrong for quite some time.

A hairdresser has taken to TikTok to show us the right way to wash our hair, and she says we should be shampooing twice.

Amy, who also goes by on TikTok, shared a video captioned ‘How to wash your hair like a pro’.

In it, she gives step by step instructions showing how she does it.

Captions of the video read: ‘Thoroughly wet your hair, spread the shampoo over your hands and evenly distribute the shampoo all over your scalp.

‘Using the pads of your fingers, massage the shampoo all over your scalp.

The video has over 400 comments so far (Picture: TikTok/

‘Don’t miss your hairline or nape.’

Then she rinses and repeats, writing: ‘Focus on the scalp. Use the suds to gently pass through the ends.’

After she rinses a second time, she adds conditioner, avoiding the roots and leaving it to soak for a couple minutes.

To rinse the conditioner, she recommends using cold water ‘if you can stand it.’

To finish off, she wraps her hair in a towel.

When asked in the comments why we should shampoo twice, Amy replied: ‘First is to remove grease and second to clean the scalp.

‘It’s like sweeping the floor before mopping.’

The clip has earned over 613,000 views so far, with some commenters sharing messages of disbelief while others attest to the method’s effectiveness.

‘I understand why but am no less horrified,’ wrote one user.

Another wrote: ‘Yes I do this in work. Most of the clients nearly fall asleep because they say it’s so relaxing to get your hair washed like this.’
