Grieving widow told to return wedding rings to husband’s family after his death

Losing a loved one is never easy to deal with, but for one poor woman, her experience with the death of her husband went from bad to worse following an unreasonable and rude request from his family.

The grieving widow took to Reddit to explain that her sister-in-law has been harassing her on social media just six months after her late husband’s funeral, as she is demanding the woman return her engagement ring, wedding ring, and eternity band that her spouse bought for her.

She wrote: “Daniel and I were married for 1.5 years, together for 7.

“I received an engagement ring, wedding ring, and eternity band from him (a wedding anniversary gift for 1 year married).”

The woman explained her husband died in an accident but did not give any further details, and said she had barely spoken to his family in the six months since his funeral.

Fellow Reddit users described the family’s actions as “disgusting”

But the silence was broken when her sister-in-law got in touch on Facebook and told her she needed to hand over the rings.

The woman added: “Yesterday, my ex-sister-in-law messaged me on Facebook. I’m a bit of an over-sharer on Facebook and they knew about my eternity ring as well as the other rings.

“My sister-in-law wants me to return all the rings to them, as they say that Daniel paid for them and because he has died, they belong to the family.

“I’ve already given them back his childhood stuff he had. Along with photos he had before I met him.

“Daniel and I didn’t have kids, so I suppose I’m no longer family.”

The widow then said she doesn’t want to give the rings to the family because they are “deeply sentimental” to her.

She said: “I’d be ok with giving them my plain wedding band, but the 2 others are beautiful, expensive (combined 19K), and remind me of the best time of my life.

“I’d give them my husband’s wedding ring, but he was buried wearing it.”

The woman claimed she has been threatened with legal action.

Fellow Reddit users were stunned by the post, and advised the widow to cut all ties with her husband’s family and keep the rings.

One wrote: “Asking for a widow’s wedding rings six months after losing her husband is deeply messed up. I’d cut ALL ties with these people.

“Those rings are YOURS, they were gifts. These people are disgusting.”

While another said: “You absolutely should NOT give them any of those rings. They belong to you. They were gifts and tokens of your relationship. His family is garbage for even considering it.”

And a third outraged commenter posted: “You are his family. You are his next of kin. He bought the rings for you. He gave the rings to you.

“Absolutely do not give these people anything that Daniel gave to you unless you feel they should have the thing, like the pictures that were taken before you met.”
