His comments come following news the Beeb has re-edited the show for repeat showings and removed any material ‘too controversial’ for a modern audience.
Greg wrote Chewin’ the Fat with Ford Kiernan before their even more successful series Still Game, and it was a much loved Scottish comedy between 1999 and 2022.
Comedy co-star Karen Dunbar revealed earlier this week that some episodes she appeared in had been censored while she was filming a new documentary The Comedy of Offence about ‘woke’ culture.
She told the Cultural Coven podcast: “As part of the documentary, we went to the BBC in London, where they edit the repeats.
“Chewin’ the Fat was going to be repeated that weekend so they brought up various sketches and asked if I thought they were going to be kept or taken out.
“The BBC review every repeat that goes out and will take out the bits that aren’t acceptable today.
“The result was Chewin’ the Fat went out but with bits taken out that would have been in the original 20 years before.”
Now Greg has responded: “It doesn’t bother me in the least. Time moves on and you have to move with it. (Though I do hope they don’t cut the wee boys at the ice cream van sketch!)”
The particular sketch he is referring to features Karen as a female ice cream van worker who lifts her skirt up to two young boys.
Others include one with Karen as Betty, the randy OAP.
A BBC spokesperson said: “The BBC regularly reviews older content to ensure it meets current audience expectations.”
All will be revealed later this month when Karen’s show airs.
Fans of the Chewin’ The Fat didn’t necessarily agree changes should be made.
One said: “Time moves on” It’s only been 20 years, Time hasn’t “moved on” It’s still here. My daughter grew up and became an adult, That is all that has happened in that 20 years. Trouble is some folk alive today live on the internet, they have no real world context to take anything in, they’re sitting thousands of miles away complaining about your show just because.”
Another added: “Y don’t they just put a wee warning at the start like they do wi Benny hill watched that the other day n wow that’s no aged well”
And someone else said: “Might upset some poor wee lamb thats incapable of turning the TV over.”
While a dismayed fourth confirmed: “Looks like Mrs Whitehouse won after all.”
