Graeme Souness has urged Liverpool to sign two ‘athletic midfielders’ this summer and admits Mohamed Salah could leave Anfield at the end of the season.

It’s been a difficult campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who have failed to defend the Premier League title and face a fight just to finish in the top four.

Liverpool, who were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid last week, are currently sixth in the Premier League, two points behind in-form Chelsea and three adrift of fourth-placed West Ham.

Souness believes failing to secure a top-four finish would have ‘serious implications’ for Liverpool, with star forward Salah potentially leaving as a result.

Egyptian superstar Salah has developed into a modern-day great for Liverpool, scoring 122 goals in 196 appearances, but may consider his future if Champions League football does not return to Anfield.

‘After their midweek Champions League exit, Liverpool need to focus on making the top four,’ Souness told The Times.

‘Failing to could have serious implications for next season, as Mo Salah has sent a few signals out that he could be open to a summer move.

‘These days, if the top players really want to move, they tend to get their way. It could be a similar scenario to Harry Kane’s at Tottenham – that if he’s not going to play in the Champions League next season that makes his mind up.’

Souness also believes Klopp needs to bring two new midfielders to the club as Liverpool look to make up ground on runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

He added: ‘If Jurgen Klopp continues to play this way, which he will, Liverpool need to sign a couple of high-intensity, athletic midfielders.

‘They also need their central defensive partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez back fit and settled, Alisson back to the form he’s shown before this season and Sadio Mane to start scoring again.

‘Also, Diogo Jota, who has proved a good signing, needs to keep putting the front three under pressure for their places, if they want to get back to challenging Man City again.’
