Graeme Souness' Liverpool prediction moves closer despite Jurgen Klopp's claim

“The world is sometimes a bad place, that in the moment when somebody is shining we immediately speak about another player who played what feels like 500 games in a row.”

Perhaps Jurgen Klopp – speaking after the 5-0 thrashing of Atalanta – was right. After all, Diogo Jota deserves to have the focus on him, as the Portuguese continued his stunning start to his Liverpool career.

His treble against the Italians brings him to seven goals in just ten appearances for the Reds, a blistering introduction for a player signed as a back-up to Klopp’s untouchable front-three.

“Without Bobby Firmino, we would not be in the Champions League even,” Klopp added.

Diogo Jota continues his red-hit start to life with Liverpool with a hat-trick vs Atalanta

“He will be in the team, and for a lot of people in the world if you ask them ‘what makes Liverpool special?’ they would say ‘the way Bobby Firmino is playing’.”

But for all of Klopp’s protestations the fact remains that Jota’s opening spell at Liverpool has raised a question.

Does Jota deserve to usurp Firmino in the German’s starting XI going forward?

Firmino has undoubtedly played a vital role in the ascension that has seen Liverpool become English, European and world champions under Klopp’s stewardship.

But the fact remains that the Brazilian’s lack of goals means he will always be a candidate to be taken out of the team.

Jurgen Klopp has hinted Roberto Firmino will come back into his starting line-up this weekend

Since the start of last season, Firmino has scored 13 goals in all competitions, with just two of those coming at home.

Jota has already eclipsed that Anfield form in five games, scoring four times, including the winner over West Ham last time out.

In fact, Jota has scored more times in his opening ten games than any Liverpool player since Robbie Fowler in 1993, netting once every 71.4 minutes.

Speaking after the win over the Hammers, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness suggested that Jota would be in the team over Firmino, sooner rather than later.

He told Sky Sports: “I would imagine pretty quickly he will be challenging Firmino for a starting spot.

Should Klopp start Jota over Firmino more often? Have your say here.

Graeme SOuness has tipped Jota to replace Firmino in Liverpool’s starting XI

“Why not? He’s got goals, he got a goal in what every three games at Wolves. And now he’s in a better team so that should improve. I like him a lot, 23 years old, he can only do better.”

Carragher also pointed to the extra goal threat that the ex-Wolves man carries and ahead of a potentially pivotal clash with Man City, that could prove vital.

Klopp may resist the temptation to start Jota this weekend, but with every passing week, the idea of dropping the once untouchable Firmino, becomes more palatable to Liverpool fans and pundits alike.
