Grab one of the thousands of NHS jobs on offer for a rewarding career

[ad_1]

WITH many workers facing redundancy due to the pandemic, the head of the NHS is urging people to join the health service – maybe retraining.

The popularity of the weekly Clap For Carers has inspired a jump in applications to work in the NHS, from 13,500 in April 2019 to 407,000 in the same month this year.

But there are 100,000 vacancies — and severe shortages of paramedics podiatrists, occupational therapists, radiographers, physiotherapists, prosthetists and nurses.

Around 27,000 NHS jobs are advertised each month.

Prerana Issar, NHS Chief People Officer, said: “The huge support staff have received from the public has been a massive boost, as they tackle the greatest global health challenge in the service’s history.

“We have had tens of thousands of former nurses, doctors and other staff coming out of retirement and a new generation starting their careers early to join the battle against coronavirus.”

Now the Department of Health and Social Care has launched a campaign to fill vacancies in these critical roles, focusing on how rewarding an NHS job can be. Vacancies range from entry-level jobs such as portering and cleaning, to human resources, admin and highly qualified medical roles.

Trevor Prior, a consultant podiatric surgeon, says: ‘A career in podiatry opens so many doors’

One huge need is for specialist foot doctors, known as podiatrists.

Increased prevalance of obesity and diabetes, as well as many of us exercising more, all means more of us have foot conditions.

But last year, podiatry courses at universities and colleges were not filled. There are opportunities to work as an NHS specialist or privately in sports and football clubs. NHS salaries begin at around £24,214 and can rise to as high as £103,860.

Trevor Prior is a consultant podiatric surgeon and sports podiatrist who has worked with the NHS, in private practice and for West Ham Football Club. The 57-year-old from Loughton, Essex, said: “A career in podiatry opens so many doors.

“Depending on your interests you could end up working with top athletes at the Olympic Games or appearing in a court room as a forensic podiatrist analysing the gait of criminals.

“Working with a patient to overcome their health complaints and enable them to live pain-free is an experience I enjoy day in, day out.”

Care to step up?

CARE home staff have been given a career boost with free access to the Boots Care Learning resource. The care industry has around 122,000 vacancies, so it’s vital that front-line staff can train for supervisor and management positions to recruit more workers.

The Boots platform is one of the UK’s top care training packages, with more than 70 modules for all residential and care home staff.

Vic Rayner, of the National Care Forum, which represents non-profit care providers, said: “This initiative from Boots will provide invaluable support for care homes and their staff’s confidence and expertise, and will help to upskill new recruits as they join our care workforce.”

Bounce back to work

BEEN furloughed or lost your job? With big firms like British Airways reportedly ready to cut thousands of staff, it is vital to realise it is not your fault.

Careers expert James Innes believes staying positive can help you bounce back quicker. He says: “The pandemic has changed everything. How you present yourself, how you sell yourself has never been more important.”

Here are his top tips . . .

  1. If you have been furloughed then lost your job, do not allow yourself to lose self-confidence. Remember, there are tens of thousands of people in the same situation.
  2. Do not take it personally. You have not been made redundant. The position was made redundant. It is not your fault, so do not behave like it is.
  3. Mindset it vital for winning a job. You need to put yourself into a positive frame of mind to stand a chance.
  1. Too many candidates fail at interview because they fail to demonstrate sufficient interest in the job. One of the key things an interviewer needs from you is for you to show you really want the job – and you cannot do that unless you adopt the right mindset.
  2. There are always going to be hurdles between you and the job you want. With a positive frame of mind you can break them down, one by one. Relish the challenge.
  3. Sometimes nerves can get the better of a candidate. I always give my clients this invaluable advice: Remember that you never look as nervous as you might feel.
