GMB's Dr Hilary warns 'Christmas is not an exception' to Covid-19 rules

Dr Hilary Jones has warned the public that ‘Christmas is not an exception’ to lockdown rules and that sacrifices need to be made.

It was claimed on Tuesday’s show that many of the public had admitted they would break Covid-19 measures to see loved ones.

It comes after calls to put larges swathes of the nation into lockdown by the middle of December, dashing hopes of restrictions easing by Christmas.

Dr Hilary backed claims that the second wave could be deadlier than the first and called for the strict guidelines to remain in place over the festive period.

He said people needed to make sacrifices in order to stop another influx of infections and hospital admissions next year.

When asked if the nation is amid a second wave, he said: “Of course we are, just look at the figures, hospitalisations double every two weeks.

“Unless people are really careful and the restrictions up north kick and see an improvement, we’ll see more cases… after more hospitalisations you see more mortality.”

He went on: “It’s still very serious, we’re still in a pandemic. I’d love to give the population good news and optimism, but this is the worst pandemic in over 100 years, we can’t rely too heavy on a vaccine as we don’t know whether that will be effective.”

He added that a vaccine would hopefully stop people from dying, but it’s unclear if it will stop people from getting the virus.

Hilary went on to encourage everyone to stick to the social distancing guidelines, and not to make exceptions for Christmas or other celebrations as this could lead to the virus spreading.

He said: “If we all do that and we are realistic and don’t say Christmas is an exception, because if we make Christmas an exception unfortunately every little celebration will be an exception.

“A birthday will be an exception, a Friday night will be an exception, a promotion… if we keep making exceptions to the rules that’s how the pandemic spreads and that’s the reality of it.”

He added: “We have to be really careful leading up to Christmas, because if you prefer Christmas partying over the health of the nation you are gonna be in the same problem we’re in now into spring and summer next year.

“We all have to make sacrifices.”
