Gmail’s new ‘out of office’ feature alerts colleagues before they even hit send

Coming back to the office after a few days away usually means trawling through an email backlog.

A standard out-of-office response usually works but there’s a high chance you’ll still have those “oops, sorry, didn’t realise you were away” messages from colleagues clogging up your inbox.

Google has added a new feature to both Gmail and Hangouts Chat that aims to cut down on this kind of thing.

If you’re out of the office, a yellow banner will appear at the bottom of any email or chat window informing your colleagues that you’re away.

They’ll get the notification before they even have a chance to hit the ‘Send’ button.

The feature is only being made available to business users who are signed up to G Suite – the more expansive paid-for version of Google’s software.

It’s going to be enabled automatically and will be rolled out to users over the next few weeks.
