Schoolchildren were left ‘shaken’ and distraught after a 12-year-old pupil was stabbed on her way home.

The victim was reportedly attacked with either scissors or a knife, however Essex Police has yet to confirm the weapon.

The child was assaulted at about 3.15pm outside Shoeburyness High School in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, on Friday November 29.

Police and paramedics setting up a cordon around the area shortly after the incident.

Parents told the Southend Echo of their distress and said children were ‘shaken up’ by what they had seen.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Clare Costello said: ‘There was a fight between two girls which resulted in one of the students becoming injured.

‘The injured girl was supported by school staff at the (Shoeburyness) youth centre until her parents and an ambulance arrived.

‘As with all incidents of this nature the police were called and it is now in their hands.

‘As you can fully appreciate, as this is now a police matter I am unable to make any further comments.’

A spokesman for Essex Police said officers and the ambulance service was called to reports of a girl being stabbed at around 3.15pm.

They added: ‘The girl was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be serious.

‘Officers arrived and arrested a 12-year-old girl on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Enquiries are ongoing.’

The suspect has since been released on bail until December 18.
