Idlib, Syria
Even among the smashed walls and surreal remnants of buildings that scatter sunbleached Idlib, torn apart in Syria’s civil war, Floyd’s face symbolises solidarity and defiance. Artist Aziz Asmar apparently portrays himself beside his colossal portrait. The seated figure wears what looks like a gas mask. It is surely a reference to accusations that Bashar al-Assad’s regime has used chemical warfare in Idlib. The slogan ‘I can’t breathe’, Floyd’s last words, has a double significance here. The Syrian people can’t breathe, either, and not just when they are being gassed.
