Gary Neville snubs Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho in ideal Manchester United starting XI

Gary Neville has picked his ideal Manchester United starting XI if everyone is fit – but there is no place for English duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho in it.

Rashford is yet to feature for the Red Devils this season after undergoing successful surgery on a niggling shoulder injury that he played through during the second half of last season and the Euro 2020 campaign with England.

Meanwhile, Sancho, who signed for United for a reported £70m in the summer from German giants Borussia Dortmund, has struggled for consistency since joining the club, with Ole Gunnar Solkskjaer admitting that he ‘lacked quality’ in the recent Carabao Cup defeat against West Ham.

Neville believes Sancho needs to offer more before he gets into the starting XI and has urged him not to complicate his game too much.

‘I get that Sancho is still learning, he’s still young,’ he told The United Stand.

‘But this is not a FIFA game, it’s not all about dribbling and trying to beat two, three, four players or little flicks and that.

‘Yeah, it’s nice when they come off but the likes of Sancho and Lingard, all these flicks, just play proper football.

‘Honestly, it winds me up! If you watch players like Giggs, they get it and they pass, one-twos and get one-on-one… we just want to keep running with the ball, trying little flicks, little backheels.

‘That’s what I saw with Martial, I saw it at times with Lingard and with Sancho and that’s where they need to learn that it’s not all about dribbling. Sometimes you can pass your way through players and get yourself in the box.’

Gary Neville’s ideal Manchester United starting XI

There was a place for Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani in the former United right back’s starting XI released as part of a Twitter question and answer session.

Neville of course included Cristiano Ronaldo, who could be played out wide right with Cavani unleashed through the middle, while Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba also make the side, with Scott McTominay preferred to Brazilian midfielder Fred in the defensive midfield position.

Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane made up Neville’s back four, with United No.1 David De Gea keeping his place in goal.
