Gary Neville appears to have been proved right after warning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that his current team selection will cost Manchester United.

United were stunned by Leicester at the King Power Stadium, and Brendan Rodgers’ side ran out 4-2 winners, extending Solskjaer’s poor run of form.

The defeat now means that United have only won two out of their last seven matches in all competitions, and their record-breaking away run of 29 Premier League games without defeat has finally come to an end.

This comes as no surprise to Neville though, who recently warned Solskjaer that his United side lack balance.

United announced the return of Cristiano Ronaldo on Deadline Day this summer, as the 36-year-old arrived from Juventus on a two-year deal to spearhead a star-studded attack.

The Portuguese star was signed alongside winger Jadon Sancho and former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane as Solskjaer continues his rebuild in a bid to end United’s recent trophy drought, and get them challenging for the league title once more.

However, despite scoring five goals since making his second debut for the club, Ronaldo is not the same type of player that left Old Trafford in 2009, and the team appear to be compensating for the 36-year-old, which seems to be having a detrimental effect according to Neville.

The former United captain spoke during a recent edition of The Overlap, and said: “There is big decisions that Ole is going to have to make in the next few weeks to compensate for Ronaldo coming.

“So when I said United could win the league with Kane, and I don’t think they can with Ronaldo, I say that with knowledge of both players. I just think the team of Manchester United would be better [with Kane].

“However, what they have to find now is a way of playing with Ronaldo in there. I support the signing, I love him to bits, but United have to find a way playing to compensate for him.

“It’s like we did 10-15 years ago, where you had Scholes and Carrick in midfield, but you had Ji-Sung Park working like you wouldn’t believe, Rooney slogging up and down that right wing, and Tevez slogging up and down around it. Everyone else was working like a dog to compensate for Cristiano.

“If you then put Bruno Fernandes in there, you put Mason Greenwood in there, you then put Paul Pogba in there with Cristiano – you’re going to get cut through on the counter-attack and you’re not winning the league.

“There’s got to be a balance to the team.”

Neville’s opinion certainly looks to carry some weight, as Leicester blew United away on the counter-attack, and it was an extremely unhappy return to the King Power for Harry Maguire, who was exploited throughout the game.

Leicester may have scored four, but it could’ve been more as United lacked control, and Solskjaer has a problem as they face a gruelling run of games.

United host Atalanta in the Champions League before facing an unbeaten Liverpool side next Sunday, with games against Tottenham and Manchester City following shortly after.
