Gary Neville feels Jordan Pickford was at fault for Denmark’s goal against England in the Euro 2020 semi-final on Wednesday night, believing the Everton goalkeeper will be ‘really disappointed’ with his effort.

Mikkel Damsgaard powered in a free-kick 30 minutes into the game at Wembley, putting Denmark ahead and seeing England concede a goal for the first time in the tournament.

A Simon Kjaer own goal quickly levelled things up before Harry Kane scored the winner in extra time to take the Three Lions into the final against Italy on Sunday.

It was a nervy, tense encounter but Neville feels it could have been less so if Pickford had been better positioned for Damsgaard’s free-kick, with the ball finding the back of the net nowhere near the corner.

Asked whether he felt the ‘keeper could have done better, the Manchester United legend told ITV: ‘Most definitely. We feared the worst when they lined up.

‘The goal was coming, Denmark were getting through us far too easily, it’s a long way out and I always think if the ball goes in the corner there’s no problem. The ball goes in the centre of the net, and the goalkeeper has to do better.

‘His big problem is that ultimately he’s blocked, he doesn’t see it until late, then he goes late himself.

‘But he has to get in a position where he can go earlier, it’s right above him and he’ll be really disappointed.’

Ian Wright defended the goalkeeper, saying criticism was harsh and the strike was worthy of praise.

‘I know what you’re saying, Gary, about where it’s gone in the goal, but the wall and the strike – Damsgaard deserves a lot of credit for the way he’s hit that ball,’ said the Arsenal icon.

‘Jordan Pickford sees that right at the death. Honestly I think that’s very harsh, simply because they have targeted him and you’ve got to give Damsgaard credit for that free-kick.’
