Gary Neville would rather see Manchester United move for Jude Bellingham over Declan Rice next summer.

Reports in September claimed United have earmarked the West Ham United star as a major transfer target for next year having failed to bring in midfield reinforcements this summer.

Rice is contracted to the Hammers until 2024 but is not expected to sign a new deal in east  London with Chelsea also long-term admirers and with Manchester City also credited with keen interest.

Neville however would rather see United move for Borussia Dortmund and England star Bellingham.

Asked during a Q&A on Twitter, Neville confirmed he would rather the clubs signed the 18-year-old over Rice if given the choice of the two.

United were desperate to sign Bellingham in the summer of 2020 only for Dortmund to beat them to the punch with a £25m deal.

While United hold interest in Rice, ESPN claim scouts have been told to look for alternative targets in the club’s search for a defensive midfielder due to concerns over the England international’s valuation and his suitability at Old Trafford.

West Ham value Rice at almost £100m and United are said to believe they can find a cheaper alternative from outside the Premier League.

There is also concern Rice would replicate rather than complement the qualities of current United star Scott McTominay.
