Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both agree defeat for Manchester United against Liverpool this afternoon will rule them out of the title race.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side head into today’s encounter eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea at the summit of the Premier League table.

We’re only eight games into the season but with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City all in impressive form, United can’t afford to lose a third league game of the season against their arch rivals.

Regardless of today’s result though, United legend Neville has already ruled them out of winning the title.

‘If United sit here at the end of the day eight points behind Chelsea, seven behind Liverpool, six behind City, it would be a devastatingly bad start,’ Neville said on Sky Sports.

‘I think it would be a terrible start to the season. For me, it would be the unthinkable.

‘I don’t think United can win the title if they win today, so it doesn’t change my mind.

‘But in terms of confidence, it would be a really bad one to go that far behind the three main teams.’

Former Liverpool defender Carragher echoes Neville’s thoughts about United’s title chances if they lose to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But he also sees today’s match as a chance for Liverpool to make others take notice that they are well and truly title challengers alongside Chelsea and City.

‘I don’t think there’s ever a good time to come to Old Trafford,’ said Carragher.

‘I agree with Gary that Liverpool have struggled under Jurgen Klopp in terms of coming here and winning the game.

‘They haven’t lost here too often I don’t think, I think their record under Jurgen Klopp against United is pretty good in terms of not losing.

‘But in terms of coming here when they’ve been going for the league and you think “go on, make that sort of big step…”

‘And I think today is a big game for Liverpool because I don’t think too many people think Liverpool can win the league. I think people just see them a little bit short of City.

‘They’ve played two of their rivals already, both of them at home, and haven’t quite convinced in those games in terms of performance.

‘I think if you come here today and win, go second in the table, a real big game that you’ve won, I think everyone will stand up and take notice.

‘You mentioned before if Liverpool win is that United out of the title race? – 100 per cent that’s United out of the title race.’
