Frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo heads straight down tunnel after Man Utd's Aston Villa defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo walked straight off the pitch and down the tunnel after Manchester United fell to defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday. The Red Devils suffered the first defeat of their Permier League campaign and wasted a chance in stoppage time to snatch a draw from the penalty spot.

United had high hopes of launching an assault on the Premier League title this season after signing star players Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer. And those hopes turned into genuine prospects when United announced the return of Ronaldo on transfer deadline day.

Ronaldo’s presence alone has the potential to lift the players around him and ensure every one of his team-mates gives everything for the club.

The Portugal international began his second spell at Old Trafford in emphatic fashion as he notched a brace in United’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United earlier this month.

He backed that up with a goal against West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend as his side battled to their fourth win of the season.

Last weekend’s victory saw United jump to third place in the Premier League table level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool.

But the former Real Madrid forward stepped aside and looked on as Fernandes skied his effort.

Following the match, a frustrated Ronaldo walked straight off the pitch and down the Old Trafford tunnel in reaction to a miserable day in the north west.

The striker barely had a sniff of goal all afternoon and would have no doubt loved the opportunity to get on the scoresheet and secure a share of the spoils courtesy of a spot-kick in the dying seconds.

Fernandes may have held on to penalty duties for the clash with Villa but he is unlikely to step up for another spot-kick this season with Ronaldo on the pitch.

United dropped to fourth in the table after Saturday’s defeat as pressure on boss Solskjaer begins to mount.

Solskjaer has spent big money to build a formidable squad at Old Trafford and there will be questions around whether he is the right man to lead the club to success.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo will continue to be a central figure for United this season and he will want to get his side firing on all cylinders as soon as possible to ensure they don’t get left behind by the other teams battling for Premier League success.
