Another gamechanging invention, Japan’s Shinkansen – pictured here at its inauguration ceremony in Tokyo – was the world’s first true bullet train. Its first service, running in 1964, took passengers on the almost 250-mile journey from Osaka to the capital in just four hours, and it has carried more than 10 billion passengers across Japan since, without a single fatal accident.
