Friends stars Jennifer Anniston and Courtney Cox lead tributes to Gunther actor James Michael Tyler

Friends actors Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matt Le Blanc, and Lisa Kudrow are amongst those who have paid emotional tributes to actor James Michael Tyler.

James, who played much loved character Gunther, died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning aged just 59.

He had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018, which later spread to his bones.

Jennifer, whose character Rachel Green who was the object of Gunther’s affection, was amongst those who were devastated to hear of the actor’s passing.

She wrote on social media: “Friends would not have been the same without you…

“Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed.”

Courteney Cox, aka Monica Gellar on the show also wrote her own message saying: “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you. Rest In peace James.”

And Matt LeBlanc, who starred as Joey Tribbiani, wrote: ‘We had a lot of laughs buddy. You will be missed. RIP my friend.”

Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay, also said: “James Michael Tyler, we will miss you. Thank you for being there for us all.”

Michael’s family told TMZ: “The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh “Friend”), from the hit series “Friends,” but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband.

“Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life.”

Michael’s character Gunther appeared in 150 episodes of Friends between 1994-2004.

The actor who made an appearance virtually on the recent Friends reunion show, also starred in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Modern Music, Just Shoot Me! and Scrubs.

In June last year he told the American ‘Today’ show: “I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones. I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years … It’s stage four. Late-stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”

Amongst one of the more poignant messages on social media were the final words said to Gunther by Rachel on the show, which have now taken on a deeper meaning.

Fans shared the quote: “When I’m in a café, having coffee, or I see a man with hair brighter than the sun, I’ll think of you.”

Another Scots fans added: “I am so happy James Michael Tyler got to be part of the Friends Reunion in May. Thank you for all the laughs, JMT. Gunther will be forever loved and missed.”
