Frank Lampard urges ‘unprofessional’ Ross Barkley to do his talking on the pitch

Frank Lampard has urged Ross Barkley to show more professionalism after the midfielder was caught dancing topless in a nightclub in Dubai this week.

The England international sent to the middle-east over the international break as he recovers from injury.

However, footage emerged of the former Everton star enjoying himself into the small hours in a nightclub.

It follows an incident from earlier in the season in which Barkley was escorted to a cash machine by police officers after he was involved in a heated row with a taxi driver over spilled chips.

The midfielder was alleged to have been unwilling to pay for the damage but eventually gave cash to the policeman, who handed it onto the unhappy taxi driver.

Lampard defended Barkley at the time but he’s left himself exposed again and the Chelsea boss says the midfielder needs to focus on his career.

‘I think there are two separate issues,’ said Lampard.

‘One is the headlines this week, Ross knows how I felt about the first headline,” the manager told reporters when questioned on the incident.

‘I backed him then, I still back him now but he showed a moment of a lack of professionalism as far as I’m concerned. And it’s not something that I want to be a pure dictator on and come down hard because I also understand that all my players are humans and have lives and I don’t police every moment of their life.

‘So I don’t think it’s a terrible thing that he’s done but all Ross needs to do now, he’s had an injury and he’s still kind of carrying the injury – he still gets a bit of pain on shooting – so he just has to work his way back in.

‘In terms of the fitness thing, he trained well and I certainly don’t hold anything against my players.

‘I like Ross, he’s firmly one of my players and I think it was something he needs to show all his reactions on the pitch.’

Barkley was not part of Chelsea’s squad that departed for Spain on Tuesday.

The Blues take on Valencia at the Mestalla and the two teams are locked on seven points, along with leaders Ajax, with two games to go in the group.
