Frank Lampard issues challenge to Callum Hudson-Odoi to secure Chelsea future

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has called on Callum Hudson-Odoi to prove his worth to the club in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Barnsley.

Hudson-Odoi signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea in September 2019, just after the arrival of Lampard as boss, which appeared to signal that the winger would be an integral part of the manager’s plans.

However, thanks partially to injury but also a lack of form, the England international started just seven Premier League games last season and has managed just 10 minutes of action so far this campaign.

The 19-year-old finds himself out of the side even while the likes of Christian Pulisic and new signing Hakim Ziyech are out injured, and Lampard has issued a challenge to the teenager.

The Blues boss need to see more from him in training and in a rare chance in the first team on Wednesday night to prove that he has a future at Stamford Bridge.

‘At the moment we have Christian Pulisic injured and Hakim Ziyech injured,’ Lampard told the official Chelsea website.

‘We played Timo Werner out wide the other day, but the absolute natural winger who is fit at the minute is Callum.

‘We know that in a Premier League squad with the number of games we’re going to play, we need competition in those areas, back-ups in those areas and players competing to make that position their own.

‘That’s where Callum is at and that’s why I keep saying he needs to train. He needs to show in training every day and when he gets his opportunity in games, which he will have in this game because he will play against Barnsley.

‘He has to show in every minute, on and off the ball, what he can do for the team and at the minute, that’s the position Callum is at. He’s had an early breakthrough in his career because of his talent, he’s had an injury and now I want to see him flourish again.’

This comes after Lampard refused to rule out Hudson-Odoi leaving the club before the transfer window closes on 5 October.

Asked about the futures of both the young winger and centre-back Antonio Rudiger, Lampard said: ‘I’m going to skirt around that question. It remains to be seen.

‘We’re not in a period where the transfer window or market is acting like it has done in recent years in terms of how players move or what level they move at.

‘Again, the competitive games have just started. I’m very open to those conversations with the players as the next couple of weeks go on. My priority will always be making sure I maintain and keep the strongest squad I can for this club but after that, of course, the individual conversations will happen within that. I will try and make sure I go into the season once the window shuts with the squad that I feel is competitive in a healthy way.’

Bayern Munich have twice made bids for Hudson-Odoi in the past, in January and summer 2019 and may be tempted to move for him again if he is available.

Chelsea take on Barnsley at Stamford Bridge at 7.45pm on Wednesday.
