Formula E are set to take their sport to the next level with the introduction of ‘Gen3’ racing car.
The only all-electric motorsport World Championship, entering their eighth season, will introduce the new car at pre-testing one year from now ready for the ninth season.
The new car is the lightest, most powerful and efficient racing car ever constructed and is capable of a top speed of 200 mph. That’s 35 percent faster than the current Gen2 cars.
The next season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship kicks off in January 2022 in Saudi Arabia. Teams will take delivery of the Gen3 next Spring with a full car reveal planned at the same time. The car will debut a year from now in pre-season testing for Season 9 when teams will get to show off its full city centre street-racing capabilities
A series of industry-leading design, production and technological innovations has helped Formula E construct the world’s most efficient car. They say 40 percent of energy used within a race will be produced by regenerative braking during a race alone.
As suggested in the name, this is the third car in Formula E’s seven-year history. Each team has the same car to work with, but they are free to change specific parts and body designs.

How you measure the power and capability of an electric car lies in kilowatts. Formula E’s Gen3 model is the most powerful yet.
It’s the first formula car with both front and rear powertrains: a new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capability of the current Gen2 to a total of 600kW.
It also features an electric motor delivering up to 350kw of power (equal to 470BHP) – which is the primary reason for the new top speed – with a power-to-weight ratio that is twice as efficient as an equivalent 470BHP internal combustion engine (ICE).
The Gen3 will also be net-zero carbon, maintaining the Championship’s status as the first sport to be certified as net-zero carbon since inception.
Electric motors power the new Gen3. They are substantially more efficient than other racing engines as they can convert over 50% more electrical energy into mechanical energy than high efficiency ICEs.
Formula E CEO, Jamie Reigle, says this developed signals the arrival of the most ‘sustainable high performance race car.’

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is a hotbed for innovations in electric vehicles (EVs) that transfer into EVs on sale to the public – Jaguar are planning to be entirely electric by 2025.
