Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has labelled Liverpool’s new signing Sepp van den Berg a ‘very talented player’ and has expressed his hope that he succeeds at Anfield.

Van den Berg became Jurgen Klopp‘s first signing of the summer last week, joining in a deal worth £1.3m potentially rising to £4.4m with add-ons from Dutch side PEC Zwolle.

The 17-year-old is expected to start out in Liverpool’s youth team but hopes are high that he will be able to challenge for a place in the first-team squad sooner rather than later.

Stam, who will take charge of Feyenoord next season, managed Van den Berg during the second half of last term during a stint with Zwolle and he rates his compatriot extremely highly.

Speaking about the youngster, Stam said: ‘Sepp is a very talented player, we’ve said that many times at PEC Zwolle.

‘We all know how this world works, so it’s inevitable that a player makes a transfer at a certain point in his career.

‘We know that English and Spanish clubs scout all over the world, but especially in the Netherlands for talented Dutch defenders, because they’re known to be good with their feet.

‘Those clubs usually have enough money lying around to take a risk and sign a few of them and see if it pays off in the long run.

‘If it works out, great. If it doesn’t, they’ll probably sell them for more money than before. In the end it’s up to the clubs, but I wish Sepp all the best and I hope he’ll turn out to be a big success story at Liverpool.’

Despite only turning 17 last December, Van den Berg amassed 22 appearances for Zwolle last season and played his part as the club avoided relegation by finishing 13th in the Eredivisie.

During his breakthrough season, Van Den Berg also established himself as a regular for the Dutch U19 side and he has caught the eye at that level scoring twice in four matches.

Van Den Berg will link up with fellow Dutchmen Virgil Van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum as well as his international youth team colleague Ki-Jana Hoever on Merseyside.
