Paul Parker would love to see either Steve Bruce or Mark Hughes take over as interim manager at Manchester United, although does not think the fans would agree with him.

Both Bruce and Hughes have been mentioned as possible stop-gaps at Old Trafford between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on Sunday, and appointing a new permanent boss in the summer.

Neither seems very likely at all, but former Red Devils star Parker is all for the idea and would be delighted to see either the Englishman or the Welshman handed the opportunity.

He has warned of a problem of appointing either man, though, not that neither is up to the task of managing Manchester United, but that the fans could not handle another club icon taking charge after Solskjaer was dismissed.

‘I would love them to go and take it because they’ve been two great players,’ Parker told Sky Sports. ‘Two players that absolutely love Manchester United, Manchester United fans absolutely love them both.

‘But the problem is I don’t think Manchester United fans emotionally could go through it again, of having one of their idols in charge of the club.

‘I think they’d be worried, I don’t think they’d want it for those two after what they’ve done as players.

‘When you’re talking about asking people, you could go and ask any player who’s played for Manchester United, say to them, “would you be interested?” They’re not going to say no, really.

‘They feel so much for the club and they know it would be a silly thing to say no to the opportunity to manage the club that they love.’

Both former United men have expressed an interest in the role, but neither seem likely to be in a good position to be offered it.

Steve Bruce was sacked as Newcastle manager last month after a forgettable spell in charge, while Hughes has been out of work since leaving Southampton in December 2018, winning just five of his 27 games in charge.

The Red Devils are looking at a more glamorous option for their interim manager, reportedly opening talks with former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde over the position.
