Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has urged Brighton and England defender Ben White to snub a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners are believed to be closing in on a £50m deal for the 23-year-old, who made 39 appearances for Brighton last season.

White’s impressive form on the south coast saw him included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020 and his summer could get even better as Arsenal close in on his signature.

But ex-Palace chief Jordan has questioned why White would want to join Arsenal as he says the Gunners are ‘all over the place’.

He told talkSPORT: ‘Why would he want to go there? There’s other steps up for him that are far more compelling than Arsenal.

‘If Ben White is now in the international squad and is revered the way he is because he’s a top quality player, why are Arsenal in the mix?

‘Arsenal are all over the place. If you’re comparing Brighton and Arsenal then, yes, Arsenal is a step up. But you’re talking about someone who is in the England squad who people inside the game think is an absolute Rolls-Royce.

‘What is the move to Arsenal for because they are a long way away from where they need to be.

‘There’s a lot of people who were impressed by Mikel Arteta but are now thinking maybe he’s all theory and no practice.’

Under Arteta, Arsenal finished just eighth in the Premier League last season, six points outside of the top-four places.

Brighton, meanwhile, recovered from a mid-season wobble to finish 16th, 13 points above the relegation zone.
