Southampton are set to snap up former Chelsea and Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero on a free transfer amid something of an injury crisis in the position.

Saints ‘keepers Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster are both injured ahead of Saturday’s trip to Arsenal in the Premier League, which leaves just 23-year-old Harry Lewis making his league debut left as an option to Ralph Hasenhuttl.

It could still be that the Saints boss gives Lewis a start, but he will not be risking only having one senior goalkeeper at this busy time of the year, so is bringing in Caballero, according to The Athletic.

The 40-year-old left Chelsea at the end of last season after spending four seasons at the club and making 38 appearances in all competitions.

Previously he had spent three years with Manchester City, making 48 appearances in that spell.

He has been mainly used as a back-up goalkeeper during his time in England, last being first choice at Malaga back in the 2013-14 season.

McCarthy picked up a hamstring problem during the 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend and was criticised by his manager after the game for not making clear how bad the problem was.

‘This is why we couldn’t play out (from the back) in the second half, but I didn’t know how tough it (the injury) was,’ said Hasenhuttl. ‘I thought he only couldn’t play the long ball, so I kept him in goal. If I would do it again, I would change it. But I couldn’t because I didn’t have the message.

‘This is something we cannot accept. There must be a message, and then we can make a change. I still had one change in hand, and I can change the goalkeeper if necessary. Alex must be more professional, and this is what I missed today.’
