Mikel Arteta reflects on Arsenal’s defeat at Liverpool

Saturday’s match against Liverpool was a big test for Mikel Arteta’s resurgent Arsenal side, but they didn’t quite make the grade.

After a difficult start to the season, The Gunners improved greatly to head into the international break in fifth place and had the opportunity to lift themselves into the Champions League with a win.

But Arteta’s side fell to a 4-0 defeat, halting the Gunners’ 10-match unbeaten run, thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and substitute Takumi Minamino.

The loss leaves Arteta with much to ponder, and ahead of the January transfer window those thoughts may well turn to potential signings to help the club in their march up the Premier League table.

And it comes just as one reported target has spoken about being ‘ready’ for his big move.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Arsenal headlines.

Arteta ‘must learn’

Arsenal went into the game at Anfield on the back of a decent unbeaten streak and had started the game well enough – but as soon as Arteta became involved with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline, there was only one winner.

Those are the thoughts of Mirror Football columnist Sam Quek following the 4-0 loss at Anfield on Saturday.

Sam says that if you’re going to get a result away to Liverpool, you had better try your best to keep the home crowd quiet – something Arteta failed to do following his clash with Jurgen Klopp.

Tierney woes highlight transfer mission

Arsenal’s back five has been set and vitally important in the Gunners’ recent resurgence after changes were made following that calamitous showing in the 5-0 demolition by Manchester City at the Etihad back in August.

On Saturday however, a piece of the jigsaw was missing. It was a stark reminder of what can happen if you show one of the Premier League’s elite any sign of weakness and it was a stark reminder of just how important the absent Kieran Tierney is.

Arteta has got a lot right in recent weeks, but sticking with Nuno Tavares ahead of the fit-again Scot was a mistake.

That solid defensive five have created the foundations for Arteta and the Gunners to build upon, and Arteta will now know exactly what he must do in the January transfer window.

Renato Sanches ‘ready’ for January transfer

Renato Sanches has stoked the fires of any potential move to Arsenal by declaring he is “ready” to move on in the January transfer window.

The Portuguese midfielder is enjoying a career resurgence for Lille in Ligue 1 and shone for his country at Euro 2020 over the summer.

Sanches was previously billed as one of the biggest prospects in European football when he moved from Benfica to Bayern Munich for an initial €35million six years ago aged just 18.

Things didn’t work out at the Bundesliga giants, with Sanches even experiencing a horrendous loan spell at Swansea City.

But his recent form has attracted renewed interest from various clubs – including Manchester United and Liverpool – and Sanches now feels he is better equipped for another crack at a bigger club.
