Foden gets England recall but Greenwood left out of Southgate's squad

Phil Foden has been recalled to England’s squad for this month’s treble header – but Mason Greenwood has been left out in the cold.

England boss Gareth Southgate has included Manchester City star Foden in his 29-man squad for the friendly with Republic of Ireland and Nations League double header with Belgium and Iceland.

But there is no room for Mason Greenwood who was sent home in disgrace along with Foden from the England squad after sneaking girls back into the team hotel as they broke strict coronavirus protocols in September.

It is understood that Southgate decided to give them a punishment of missing one squad last month for the games with Denmark, Belgium and also Wales.

But that would be enough for the pair but there was no way back for Manchester United star Greenwood who has not started every game for his club and he has not been selected purely on form.

Mirror Sport revealed last week that Foden would be back in but Greenwood was left sweating on his place because of form as United have gone through a bad spell.

Reece James is in even though he will serve a two-game ban and, despite Harry Maguire also having a one-game ban for being sent off, the Manchester United captain is also included.

Southgate will look at an experimental line up to face Ireland at Wembley as he tries out different options.

There is a welcome return for fit-again Raheem Sterling in attack while Jack Grealish keeps his place.
