Five abducted royal family members rescued in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has said it rescued five members of the household of Oba Samuel Adelodun, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were kidnapped by gunmen along the Osi/Obbo-Ayegunle Road last Thursday.

They are the king’s driver, identified only as Kunle; his  security guard, Lawrence Abiodun; his maid, Bunmi Akanbi; and her twin six-year-old daughters, Taiwo and Kehinde.

The victims were returning from Osi, a neighbouring community, to Obbo-Ayegunle, in a Toyota Sienna, when the gunmen accosted them around 6.30pm and took them into the bush.

The Toyota Sienna minibus in which they were travelling, bearing the number plate of Owalobbo of Obbo-Ayegunle, was abandoned on the road.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement on Sunday, said the rescued victims were in good health.

“The Kwara State Police Command is pleased to inform members of the public of the successful search and rescue operations conducted in the kidnap incident involving twin girls of his HRM Oba Samuel Adelodun, the Owalobo of Obbo Ayegunle, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, and three servants on October 14, 2021.

“The feat, as usual, was made possible with the confidence reposed in the Kwara State Police Command, the support of the families of the victims and the collaboration of vigilantes and local hunters of the area and his royal highness, the Owalobo of Obbo Ayegunle.

“The kidnappers, under intense pressure from the command’s tactical teams and the vigilantes, had no option than to abandon their victims and escape into the bush.

“The victims were thereafter rescued unhurt, medically examined, found healthy and handed over to their families. Effort is still being intensified to arrest the fleeing kidnappers,” the police said.
