Faf du Plessis has thrown his support behind MS Dhoni after the India legend dismissed rumours he would retire from all forms of cricket following the 2020 Indian Premier League.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket earlier in the year, endured an underwhelming IPL campaign, scoring 200 runs in 12 innings and failing to make a half-century.

Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings lost eight of their first 11 group matches to fall out of contention for the play-offs, but at least ended the season on a high with three straight wins.

There has been speculation that Dhoni could walk away from CSK and cricket as a whole following IPL 2020 but the former India captain dismissed the rumours following Chennai’s victory over Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.

Asked if he was retiring from all forms of cricket, Dhoni said: ‘Definitely not.’

Responding to Dhoni’s blunt response, Chennai Super Kings and South Africa batsman Du Plessis said: ‘When you think CSK you think of MS Dhoni.

‘And also the IPL needs MS Dhoni to play. The fans love him so much so why not?

‘He still feels motivated and wants to pitch up every day and be a big player with expectation and pressure.

‘That answer told you he is very much motivated to come back stronger next year.

‘There have been a few rumours floating around I have seen of him possibly retiring. So that answer was possibly a hell no straightaway.’

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, meanwhile, says Dhoni deserves ‘appreciation’ from the CSK owners despite their struggles this year.

‘MS has won them three IPL trophies, couple of Champions Leagues, he has made them one of the top successful sides in the IPL after Mumbai Indians,’ he said.

‘So CSK are going to continue with MS – it is just the relationship, it is just the mutual respect. That’s why MS has been so loyal.

‘That’s why MS has given everything: heart and soul, his sweat, sleepless nights – I’m sure he must have had sleepless nights while he has continued captaining CSK.

‘He deserves appreciation from the owners. I keep saying that why CSK is CSK is because of the relationship between the owners and the captain.

‘They have given all the freedom to MS, and MS has received all the mutual respect from the owners as well.

‘So I would not be surprised if they continue with MS and MS plays until the time he wants to play. And then next year he still continues to be the captain and have a much different squad than what he has this time around.’
