Fabinho fires warning to Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea after inking new Liverpool contract

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has insisted that Jurgen Klopp’s side are determined to win more trophies this season after penning a new long-term contract with the club on Tuesday. The Reds were left empty-handed last time around, with Manchester City clinching the Premier League title and Chelsea earning a historic Champions League triumph.

Liverpool were eventually forced to settle for a third-placed finish, five points behind runners-up Manchester United, to retain their place in Europe’s premier club competition for the campaign ahead.

However, the Merseyside outfit would have been hoping to secure back-to-back domestic titles, with their season curtailed by a large-scale injury crisis.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip were all sidelined with long-term problems, while Jordan Henderson also missed a decent chunk of matches after the turn of the year.

The latter was often forced to play in central defence alongside Fabinho to fill the gaps left by their stricken team-mates, but the pair will be expected to return to their usual midfield roles when Liverpool begin the new campaign against Norwich City later this month.

Fabinho was a crucial member of the side last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions, and has been duly rewarded for his efforts with a new contract until the summer of 2026.

The midfielder issued a strong message regarding Liverpool’s hopes of silverware after the news was confirmed, stressing that he is confident of achieving continued success once the season gets underway.

“We already did this [winning trophies] and we know our quality,” Fabinho told LFCTV GO.

“We know with these players we can go really far in all the competitions. In the last year we didn’t win any trophies.

“So I think everyone is hungry to win more trophies, win more things, to keep our fans happy. Hopefully we will do this this season.”

DON’T MISS

Fabinho went on to reflect on last season’s shortcomings, admitting that Liverpool’s injury problems played a significant role in hampering their Premier League title defence before reiterating his desire to waste no time in putting things right.

“It was a really hard season, a different season for all the injuries, for COVID, for playing without fans almost all the season,” added the Brazilian.

“In the end, you finish in the top three, so it was really important for us, for the club being in the Champions League this year.

“Now the boys are back, some players like Virgil, who was out all the season injured, Joe Gomez, Joel as well. Important players are back, so hopefully they will get the confidence back.

“They will play and come back to the highest level they have because they will be really important for us. But it was important as well for the other players who showed their quality, like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams.

“As a team, we are Liverpool so we look always for good things, like winning trophies. We have to [have] this mentality because we know our quality.
