Good evening and welcome to Goodison Park for live SunSport coverage of the Premier League fixture between local rivals Everton and Liverpool.
The first Merseyside derby of the season is always an eagerly anticipated affair, but tonight’s clash takes on extra significance for one man.
Rafa Benitez oversaw this fixture 14 times as Liverpool boss in the naughties, but now finds himself in the blue corner of the city – and the new Everton boss under pressure.
The Spaniard has only been in his current role for five months, but five defeats in a winless seven-game spell have left those on Gwladys Street concerned.
Benitez does at least have Richarlison at his disposal again following the Brazilian’s suspension, but other key men such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina remain out.
Liverpool, meanwhile, make the short trip across Stanley Park in red hot form, having lost just one game this term while winning eight of their last ten.
The Anfield outfit have also dominated this fixture for the past decade, although February’s 2-0 home defeat in the last Merseyside derby will be fresh in their memories.
Their last trip to Goodison was one to forget too. The Reds twice let a lead slip, and lost Virgil van Dijk to long-term injury after a thumping Jordan Pickford challenge.
It’s all set-up for revenge – or possibly Rafa’s redemption.
Kick-off is scheduled for the unusual slot of 8.15pm, and we’ll soon bring you confirmation of tonight’s teams as part of our pre-match build-up.
