Everton have suffered a serious setback with the news that first choice left-back Lucas Digne could miss the next two months through injury.

The France international has been a key component of Carlo Ancelotti’s rapidly improving side this season and registered two assists in last week’s win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Digne is said to have suffered an ankle injury in training earlier this week and the Toffees fear they could now be without the 27-year-old until the New Year.

Everton are currently sixth in the Premier League table and are targeting a Europa League qualifying spot but face a difficult run of fixtures with the likes of Chelsea, Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester City all on the horizon, while they are also due to face Manchester United in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup next month.

Digne was plagued by ankle injuries during his time at Barcelona but has only been unavailable for selection on five occasions since his move to Goodison Park in two-and-a-half years ago.

Ancelotti will now face a selection dilemma ahead of Saturday’s match against Leeds United with replacing Digne likely to boil down to a choice between the experience Fabian Delph and Niels Nkounkou.

The 20-year-old Nkounkou joined Everton in the summer from Marseille in a cut-price £250,000 deal and made his Premier League debut in a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle earlier this month.
