Europe-based man, 63-year-old lady, rescued from suspected kidnappers in Delta

Police operatives and vigilantes in Delta State have rescued a 63-year-old lady and Europe based Nigerian from kidnappers in an isolated place along Irri-Aviara community roundabout, Oleh ,in Isoko South Council of the state.

Spokesperson for the command, DSP Bright Edafe told newsmen in Asaba, yesterday, that on November 30 about 2200hrs, a motorcyclist informed the Police at Oleh Division that a lady (name withheld), who hails from Ughelli town was seen with two suspected kidnappers, armed with machetes.

Edafe said Police patrol teams in a combined effort with Irri vigilante swiftly mobilised and cordoned the surrounding bushes, but the hoodlums on sighting them, abandoned the victim and escaped into the bush.

He explained that investigation later revealed that the lady was kidnapped on November 26 about 1830hrs at Olori road Ughelli on her way home.

According to the PPRO,  policemen had been strategically deployed for the purpose of getting useful information with a view to seeing that the hoodlums are arrested and brought to book.  Edafe also revealed how a man, who was based in Europe was rescued from kidnappers at Irri roundabout, Oleh town.

He said police’s efforts to rescue the man (name withheld), paid off on December 2 about 2143hrs, as they succeeded in arresting one of the kidnappers, while others escaped.

He said: “Police received another distressed call from the vigilante deployed around Irri roundabout Oleh,  that some hoodlums were sighted near the roundabout and operating in a white Toyota Hilux without registration number, attempting to kidnap  one man (name withheld), who recently returned from Europe, but disagreement ensued  among them, which made residents in the area, who became suspicious  to alert the vigilante.

“Following the information received, combined team of Police operatives/vigilante stormed the area in a carefully planned operation, which led to the arrest of one of the suspects, a 26 year- old Davidson Odigho of Irri community in Oleh, while other members of the gang  escaped in the white hilux.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of the gang that kidnapped the 63-year-old woman and abandoned her when they noticed that the police were closing in on them.

“The suspect led Police operatives to his house where  one  Ak 47 rifle, 19 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one  magazine,  one pump action gun and 26 live  cartridges concealed in a sack bag and buried in the compound were recovered, while manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang is ongoing.”
