Freshen things up

19:30: England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV Sport: “Jadon Sancho is in to freshen up the team. We have good players to come in and it’s a chance in the wide areas to refresh the group.

“His ability one against one to beat players, his decision making is excellent. His number of goals and assists at Dortmund speaks for itself.

“Our full-backs are all good players. We are very strong in that area.”

Why St Mary’s?

19:25: So the decision NOT to play at Wembley is part of the FA’s initiative to take England on a tour around the country so everyone can have the opportunity to seem them live.

It’s only England’s second match at St Mary’s Stadium and first since October 2002, when they drew 2-2 with Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier.

Roy Keane…

19:20: Yes, Roy Keane is in the ITV studio this evening. Always a pleasure to see Roy taking chunks out of anything that moves.

He’s actually been very balanced about Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

“The only issue I’d have with Rashford, I think it’s great for any young player to learn his trade playing in a few different positions, what he’s got to be careful of is that he doesn’t become Jack of all trades and master of none,” Keane said on ITV.

“That’s your worry for Rashford. It’s up to the player himself to obviously give Ole a headache and say ‘listen, I want to be main striker here’, obviously selling Lukaku, and give the manager that headache. If you ask me between the two players I think he’d get more goals than Martial.”

Twitter round-up

Jim: We will probably still win which gives him the excuse not to change it but a very poor and uninspiring midfield selection again from Southgate. Maddison is twice the player Barkley is and I don’t see what more he can do to show he deserves a chance.

Marcus: As a Norwich fan, I spent a whole season watching James Maddison dominate the Championship in an average team. When he got his deserved move to the Premier League, he looked at home right away. England’s strikers would love playing alongside him. Barkley is only picked ahead of him because he plays for Chelsea.

Sensing an anti-Ross Barkley thing happening tonight…

Bernard Challandes = Legend

18:50: Well… Bernard Challandes is quite something, isn’t he?

The Kosovo manager gave a crazy/loud/frantic/impassioned (select your own adjective) press conference ahead of the fixture – shouting at the top of his voice that England are the best team in the world.

“We are Kosovo and we are here against one of the best teams in the world, in my opinion – the best team in the world,” Challandes said.

“I think it is in my philosophy that if we don’t dream it is unnecessary to play such games, we should dream and do all that is possible to disturb England.

“If I say ‘we come to win’, I think a lot of people think that is pretentious; if I say ‘it is not possible to win against England’, I must change my job.”

May want to turn the volume down for this one…

The standings…

18:45: Is there any point in looking at the standings? “Kind of,” he says while doing it anyway.

It’s a perfect three from three for Gareth Southgate’s England with a healthy +13 goal difference. Kosovo are second with eight points and the Czech Republic follow next with six points.

Bulgaria are effectively out on two points from five, while Montenegro are on the same points having played a game less.

Evening…

18:35: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of England vs Kosovo.

How’s everyone doing during the international break? I know it’s a difficult time to be starved of Premier League action – but we’ve just got four days to last.

Tonight should be a very good match, actually. Kosovo might sound like ideal whipping boys but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

They are good. They are very good. They haven’t lost in their last 15 matches in all competitions.

Will that fine record come to a crushing end at St Mary’s Stadium? Let’s find out.

England vs Kosovo – Team News

Gareth Southgate is expected to start Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho against Kosovo this evening.

England head into their fourth game of Euro 2020 qualifying fresh off the back of a convincing 4–0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley on Saturday.

Trippier was rewarded for a strong start at Atletico Madrid after leaving Tottenham in the summer but Alexander-Arnold is seen as the long-term option in the position.

Elsewhere, teenage sensation Jadon Sancho is primed to come back into the fore with Marcus Rashford making way.

Southgate is otherwise expected to stick with the same players as Saturday with Jordan Pickford retaining his No 1 spot and Michael Keane and Harry Maguire buttressing the side.
