England fans in violent clash with Porto riot police after bottles thrown in fan zone

England fans were injured on Wednesday after clashes with Portuguese supporters in Porto’s Liberdade Square.

Eyewitnesses said riot police launched a baton charge after bottles were thrown when Ronaldo put Portugal 1-0 up against Switzerland in the first Nations League semi final.

One injured fan from Blackburn said a Portuguese fan threw a bottle as Three Lions fans sang songs taunting the host nation after their goal.

He tripped and fell on broken glass injuring his hand. Another England fan suffered a head injury from a flying bottle, and a third received treatment for a baton wound to his back in the fan zone near Aliados Metro, where the matches are shown on giant screens.

Unconfirmed reports suggest there was at least one arrest but the nationality of the fan is unknown.
