Ellie Goulding admits that being an activist in the public eye has ‘jeopardised’ her job and left her falling out of favour with fans.

The Love Me Like You Do hit-maker, 33, is often seen using her platform to speak out about important issues whether it be the recent Black Lives Matter movement or the environment.

But, Ellie admits that taking a stand has led to her losing followers on social media and it can be harmful to her career.

Speaking on the So Hot Right Now podcast, she revealed that whenever she speaks out about climate change on Instagram, she loses ‘at least a thousand’ followers every time.

‘I lose followers, every time I post anything about climate change, I lose at lease a thousand followers. Because people are following me for a very specific reason and it’s not the environment,’ Ellie said.

Suggesting she used to hold back when it came to sharing her views so publicly, Ellie explained: ‘I was very protective over my job because I’ve created my job entirely by myself.

‘It’s my livelihood, it’s my everything, it’s how I make money. I employ a lot of people and what I do affects not just me, but a lot of people.’

She said: ‘I genuinely thought the activism would jeopardise my job and I believe it has, actually.’

Back in April, Ellie was seen urging her fans to ‘step up’ when it comes to tackling environmental issues and protecting the world for future generations.

She wrote: ‘#EarthDay 2020 in lockdown gives me a chance to pause. So proud to be a global ambassador for UN Environment @unep. This year the Earth has sustained nearly 8 billion of us while under incredible pressure.

‘Planet Earth’s ability to regenerate and provide healthy soils, breathable air and drinkable water is incredible but we abuse this. It’s time to step up. As we emerge from this crisis, we must address the crisis in nature and climate.

‘Who is up for a new way of living, being, dreaming, loving and thinking that puts the Earth first? I know I am. Every day needs to be Earth Day. 🌏.’

Ellie, who tied the knot last year to husband Caspar Jopling, has an impressive 14.5million followers on Instagram and 6.6million followers on Twitter.

Her comments come as she has just announced – amid the coronavirus lockdown – new dates for a host of intimate shows on her Brightest Blue tour set to kick off next year in 2021.

Ellie told fans: ‘The general feeling of my new album is that people get to immerse themselves into a world of hope despite everything being so bleak, you have to tear through your own demons to get to the other side but also realising that you can free yourself from toxic relationships!

‘Looking forward to finally being able to see you all and be with you once again.’
