Election 2019: Why the December election could deter older voters


However, voter turnout is difficult to reliably predict, as there are several factors impacting people’s desire to vote.

Dr Steve McCabe, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Brexit Studies, Birmingham City University, explained one of these factors was the timing of the election.

He said the winter election means people will vote when the nights come earlier, and the weather is colder.

For some populations, such as the elderly or sick, venturing out in the cold poses risks, which makes them less likely to turn up.
