Edinson Cavani is facing a delay in making his Manchester United debut due to the UK’s quarantine regulations.

The 33-year-old completed his free transfer to United on deadline day having left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Cavani continued to live in France after his departure from PSG but due to the UK’s coronavirus rules, the striker will need to quarantine for 14 days when he enters the country.

United are seeking clarification as elite athletes are exempt from the rule. However, Cavani has not been part of PSG’s secure bubble where the players are regularly tested.

Cavani revealed this week that he and his partner, Jocelyn Burgardt, had tested positive for coronavirus following their holiday in Ibiza in the summer.

Should Cavani be required to self-isolate for 14 days, that would mean that he would be unable to make his debut for United’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on October 17.

His first appearance for United could then come against his former club PSG in the Champions League group stage on October 20.

‘Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team. His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre,’ Solskjaer said of Cavani this week.

‘He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals.

‘He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.

‘The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last 10 years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward.

‘Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already without Anthony Martial for the match against Newcastle after his red card in the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham last Sunday.
