Ginger hair and a loop pedal probably go hand in hand with Ed Sheeran, but the musician was actually told to drop both at the start of the career if he wanted to hit the big time in the music biz.

The Thinking Out Loud hit-maker, 29, was told to dye his hair and ditch his loop pedal – which he is known for bringing out on stage during his live performances – by his first management team.

Ed’s manager and long-time pal Stuart Camp revealed during a new episode of podcast Straight Up that the singer was told ‘he wasn’t going anywhere’ when he was first starting out.

‘The other management actually resigned from him because they said he wasn’t going anywhere,’ Stuart explained.

‘He had to drop the looping [pedal] and dye his hair black… and give up the rapping,’ he revealed, before joking: ‘I can see their point there.’

Ed decided against their advice and went elsewhere instead, but that didn’t stop the company from claiming they were the ones to first discover him.

‘For a long time their website said they discovered Ed Sheeran, which was of course a sort of hilarity. It didn’t mention the bit where they said he was sh*t and he went away,’ Stuart said.

This was way back in 2009 and over the last decade, Ed has gone on to have the last laugh as he’s become one of the world’s best-selling artists.

He’s sold more than 150million records worldwide, has four albums under his belt and is now worth a cool £200million.

Stuart teased that fans can expect another two albums from Ed, as he revealed that the singer has been back in the studio recording and is hoping to release a new record ‘this time next year’.

‘I’m looking at a piece of paper that actually has the track listing for the album after the next one on it. He’s always one or two albums ahead,’ he said.

After touring non-stop since 2017, Ed decided to take a break from both social media and music in December 2019 and told fans he’d be back when he’s feeling ready.

‘I promise to be back with some new music when the time is right and I’ve lived a little more to actually have something to write about,’ he wrote in a statement shared to Instagram.

Ed broke his social media silence last month to confirm news he and wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their first child together – a daughter called Lyra.

He told fans: ‘Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you… Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

‘We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.’

Ed and Cherry tied the knot in 2018, four years after the childhood sweethearts reconnected in 2014 and started dating.
