EastEnders fans disgusted after evil wife-beater Gray becomes Whitney's hero

EastEnders fans have been left conflicted after Gray Atkins became a knight in shining armour – just days after leaving his wife black and blue in a violent attack.

The lawyer finally came to former client Whitney Dean’s rescue at the end of last night’s episode, when he found the hole in her roof that evil Leo had been using to spy on her.

But at the start of tonight’s show, Gray walked into a room to find his other half Chantelle covering up severe bruises on her abdomen, following a viscous assault last week in which she was knocked to the ground and left for dead.

As usual he was full of apologies, telling a clearly traumatised Chantelle: “I’m so sorry, I’ve just been under so much pressure.”

But fans were livid.

One said: “Gray is a s**t husband who needs to be arrested but he’s hell of a good lawyer #Eastenders.”

Another said: “Just caught up on #Eastenders and as much as I hate Gray I nearly jumped for joy when he found Leo’s little hiding spot!

And one said: “#Eastenders was good today, pity, gorgeous @_TobyAlexander who plays Gray, has a horrible part in domestic violence, it’s bittersweet…l’m sure he will get Whitney off, in the clear. Hope he gets his job back, and is kinder to chantel (sp).”

At the same time as Gray was hitting out at his hairdresser wife, Whitney was collapsing in her prison cell as her health continued to deteriorate from a hunger strike.

Having lost his job, he has been determined to help defend her over Leo’s murder, which was done in self-defence.

Last night he went to see Whitney to beg her to allow him to retake her case on, and after she refused, he went to her flat with Sonia and finally made the discovery fans have been waiting months for.

After finding the hole, Gray shouted out for Sonia to come and look too.

The pair climbed up into the loft and came across Leo’s secret hideaway complete with pictures of Whitney, snacks and debris.

Gray warned: “Don’t touch anything… we’ve got him.”

Tonight’s episode was an especially bleak one, featuring heartbreaking scenes between Sharon and Denise as Sharon struggles to cope with her new baby following the death of Denny, and the continuation of Ben’s hearing loss storyline.

EastEnders airs on BBC One on Mondays and Fridays at 8pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm
