Don't believe Corbyn! Labour aides reveal Scottish referendum COULD be held if SNP surge

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn could hand Nicola Sturgeon a second independence referendum within just two years of a Labour government. Speaking to journalists Mr Corbyn said he would not allow a second independence vote during the first term of a Labour Government.

But, aides were quick to suggest that if the SNP secure a huge majority in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election’s, then that “position could change”.

In the interview during his two-day tour in Glasgow, Labour Party leader told PA: “No referendum in the first term for a Labour government because I think we need to concentrate completely in investment across Scotland.”

But pressed if it would be an undemocratic move if the SNP won a majority of seats in Scotland in the General Election, he said: “If the SNP win the majority of seats that’s the election of those MPs.

“I’m very clear that a Labour government’s priority is investment in Scotland.”

Aides later backtracked and made it clear that Labour’s position could change if the SNP won a majority in Holyrood in 2021.

BBC’s Political Correspondent, Nick Eardley quickly explained Mr Corbyn’s stance on the issue of another independence vote.

He wrote on Twitter: “Labour sources say Corbyn believes no referendum in first term because doesn’t believe SNP will win Holyrood election”.

Holyrood is currently made up of 62 SNP Members of Scottish Parliament, 31 from the Scottish Conservative & Unionist Party and 23 from the Scottish Labour.

Mr Corbyn had previously hinted that he would not stand in the way of another Scottish independence referendum.

Towards the end of October, Mr Corbyn told LBC: “We will not countenance an early referendum in Scotland, that could come much later, only if the Scottish Parliament said they wanted it.

“That is what the devolution deal was in 1997. I do not support Scottish independence, I do not think another referendum is a good idea either.

“I want to get on with improving the lives of people across Scotland.”

This is a breaking story…more to follow
