Donny van de Beek sent warning over Manchester United role by Dutch legend Ronald de Boer

Ronald de Boer has warned Donny van de Beek that he may have to consider a move away from Manchester United if he can’t be given assurances over his playing time at the club.

The midfielder’s role at Old Trafford has been limited since joining from Ajax back in the summer for £40million.

Van de Beek has started just twice in the Premier League and didn’t even make it off the bench in United’s last three league games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that the Netherlands international needs time to settle in and will eventually go on to be an important player for the club.

However, with Euro 2020 just six months away, De Boer believes now may be the time for the 23-year-old to hold talks with United over his role going forward.

The Dutch legend admitted that if those discussions aren’t progressive, Van de Beek may have to think about going out on loan or even seeking a permanent switch away from Manchester.

‘The European Championship is coming, he will undoubtedly want to be there,’ De Boer told AD

‘Maybe it would be good for him to discuss with the club exactly what they want with him. If the view on playing time does not improve, he may have to declare that he should be rented or even sold.

‘You have to be lucky every now and then. Of course it doesn’t look great now, but with a great performance it can suddenly change completely. We also don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

‘Perhaps they have made certain agreements with his transfer, they will get him ready for next year this season. That always remains a bit of a guess.’

Van de Beek was also linked with a move to Real Madrid before joining United, and De Boer feels the style of play in La Liga is a more natural fit for the midfielder compared to the Premier League.

‘I think his playing style is better suited to the Spanish league than to the English,’ De Boer added.

‘In the Premier League it is often run and fly, in Spain more combination football is played. Donny is physically fine. But he comes into his own better in the Ajax game.’
