Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Manchester United‘s hopes of signing Kieran Trippier could be reignited thanks to fellow right-back Diogo Dalot reportedly wanting to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Dalot, who spent last season on loan at AC Milan, was expected to depart over the summer months but remained in the north west after manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed with him during pre-season.

However, it is believed the Portugal international staying put was a result of the Red Devils’ unwillingness to meet Atletico Madrid‘s eye-watering £40million price tag on Trippier.

Dalot has made just two starts this season, proving that Solskjaer is not keen on his current competition for first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Dalot reportedly wants out of Man Utd

Il Romanista, via Sport Witness, claim that Jose Mourinho‘s Roma are interested in the 22-year-old, who is ‘not pleased’ with his lack of regular game time this term.

With his contract expiring in June 2023, the Serie A giants are hopeful that a deal, which would begin as a loan, could cost them less than €10million (£8.4m) in total.

Mourinho signed Dalot as United manager from Porto in the summer of 2018.

The report comes just over a week after Trippier admitted he would “love” to return to the Premier League, despite enjoying success with Diego Simeone‘s reigning La Liga champions.

Trippier has been heavily linked to Man Utd

AS also claim that just days after the window closed, Solskjaer and co ‘tried until the last minute’ to sign the 31-year-old and Mundo Deportivo add that the ex-Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur defender was ‘clinging’ to interest from the Red Devils.

Trippier played a key role in England‘s route to the Euro 2020 final in the summer and has since captained the Three Lions.

His ability to play as a wing-back and on the left would offer Solskjaer more tactical flexibility – something his potential replacement in the Old Trafford dugout, Antonio Conte, would likely not ignore either.

But the current United boss has previously hinted that Dalot would feature more during the ongoing 2021-22 campaign, who is similarly attack-minded and versatile.

Solskjaer discussed his prospects following the shock 2-1 loss to Young Boys in the Champions League last month, in which he filled in for Wan-Bissaka once the latter was sent off.

“He did well for Portugal, he had a season where he learned a lot from in Milan,” the Norwegian explained.

“He kept fit, that was a big thing and he’s got qualities that we look at trying to exploit more and more.

“He’s got more experience. We’re not here just to loan out players for years and years.

“Last year’s loan was to give him experience and game time and I think he did well when he came on the other night.”
