Diogo Dalot set for Manchester United stay after Kieran Trippier bid rejected by Atletico Madrid

Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Diogo Dalot will come to nothing this summer as Manchester United have not been able to bring in a replacement at right-back, seeing a bid for Ateltico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier turned down.

The Red Devils have been linked with Trippier for the entire summer, after he impressed in Atletico’s La Liga-winning campaign last season and while he featured for England in their run to the final of Euro 2020.

Reports back in June suggested that United had made a bid of just €12m for Trippier, which the Spanish side rejected out of hand, wanting his release clause of €40m to be met.

SPORT1 report that the Red Devils returned with a bid of €21m (£18m) but that was also rejected and now Trippier will stay in Spain at least until January.

The 30-year-old has begun his third season with Atletico, starting one and coming off the bench in two of their opening three games of the La Liga season, which have produced seven points.

With Manchester United’s pursuit of Trippier unsuccessful, this has rendered Dortmund’s interest in Dalot futile as the Red Devils have to keep him as back-up to first choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The 22-year-old Portuguese right-back spent last season on loan at AC Milan, making 33 appearances in all competitions and went on to play twice for Portugal at Euro 2020.

He came on for Manchester United in the win over Wolves at the weekend and will hope to push Wan-Bissaka for a role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.

Dortmund had made a loan offer for Dalot, according to the Athletic, with AC Milan also interested in bringing him back to Serie A, but with a move for Trippier impossible, Manchester United will keep their man.
