Diogo Dalot has singled out team-mate Fred for praise following Manchester United’s 1-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace in Ralf Rangnick’s first game in charge.

Fred scored the only goal of the match, 13 minutes from time, with an impressive curled shot with his weaker right foot from outside the box.

Before that moment, the Red Devils had complete control of the match but had struggled to break down a resolute Palace defence.

Speaking after the match, right-back Dalot hailed the Brazil international, who has been on the receiving end of criticism over his performances so far this season.

‘He is the underdog. Everybody can criticise him but he keeps his head clean, he goes inside the pitch and every game he gives everything that he has – that is what this club is about,’ Dalot told MUTV.

‘Even if you lose a ball, even if you lose a shot on goal you are always going to try next and you are always going to fight for the team. That’s what we want.

‘Players like that are what we want.’

Meanwhile, Rangnick joked that he didn’t realise Fred could shoot with his right foot, before also praising the 28-year-old’s attitude.

‘Not with his right foot, I had to ask my assistant, ‘who scored’. He said Fred, I said ‘what with his right foot’,’ Rangnick added.

‘He’s a wonderful boy, this is one thing I can say after just two days and from ole, I think it’s great to have a boy like him, same with Scott [McTominay].

‘With those two number sixes, we’re able to play aggressive football against the ball.’
