Former Manchester United and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has backed England to win Euro 2020 by beating Italy in Sunday’s crunch showdown at Wembley.

The Three Lions reached a final of a major international tournament for the first time in 55 years after they recorded a 2-1 victory over Denmark on Wednesday night.

Mikkel Damsgaard opened the scoring for the Danes at Wembley before Simon Kjaer turned Bukayo Saka’s cross into his own net to level up the scores.

The moment of jubilation for England came in extra time, when Harry Kane converted the rebound from a saved penalty to book his side a meeting with Italy.

Roberto Mancini’s side have beaten the likes of Belgium and Spain on their way to the final, while extending their run of unbeaten games to 33.

But Berbatov thinks that streak will be ended by Gareth Southgate’s England this weekend with a 1-0 win in normal time.

‘Reaching the final of Euro 2020 is a major achievement for England,’ Berbatov told Betfair. ‘I had a sense that this could be England’s year. It’s thoroughly deserved, although credit to Denmark for a great effort in the semi-final. The talent and quality in this England squad is capable of doing something special and I’m really pleased to see them in the final.

‘Their opponents Italy have an excellent squad too, so it won’t be easy on Sunday.

‘Gareth Southgate has a nice problem. Who should he play? He has great players on the bench, like Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish. Southgate can’t play them all but he has to keep them all happy. So far he’s managed that and there is great togetherness in the squad.

‘The only thing they have to watch is the pressure. In the first half England were a little tense and the upshot was that Denmark scored the first goal. Pickford made some mistakes. Eventually, England took control of the game but they must make sure the pressure doesn’t get to them against Italy.’

‘Italy are unbeaten in 33 games and are enjoying a great tournament,’ he added.

‘They are passionate, well-organised and will run all day. But I am rooting for England. Of course I f*****g am! I played half my career in England and I loved the country, the people and I still love going back. The players deserve to win.

‘Between now and Sunday they must rest and prepare mentally for the game of their lives.

‘The final is not going to be an easy watch for fans on either side. I would love to see goals but I think both teams will be very cautious.

‘I predict that England will win 1-0 in normal time. Stay calm, England. You have the quality to bring this home. Good luck.’
