Dimitar Berbatov said Manhester United’s performance against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night made ‘no sense’ was ‘very bad’ and ‘awful to watch.’

The Red Devils produced a pretty woeful display in Turkey as they were beaten 2-1 by their hosts, mustering up just two shots on target as they struggled to create and also defended badly.

The first goal was especially poor from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as they pushed up to attack a corner, but left Demba Ba completely unmarked just inside his own half, so a simple punt forward set the striker in on goal.

It was illustrative of the malaise in the side, which Berbatov finds hard to understand after watching the Red Devils walloping RB Leipzig 5-0 the previous week.

‘The performances of Manchester United players last night weren’t what they should be, it was very bad,’ the Bulgarian told Betfair.

‘I never really know what to say about these performances, because there’s no explanation. One week, 5-0 Leipzig, brilliant, next week, this. It makes no sense.

‘It’s why last week I said we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, and why consistency is so important. The first goal especially, I can’t even describe how bad that was. Demba Ba isn’t Usain Bolt, and they still couldn’t catch him.

‘It was awful to watch.

‘Simple things like positioning, and knowing who is back and who is not, players should know this. I’ve seen more than once now these guys not covering each other, simple things.’

It seems like the former United man is not pulling any punches, but he insists he is and says he could be much more critical, such was the lack of quality in the performance.

‘They aren’t one-off events, and they’ve made an impression on me,’ Berbatov continued. ‘It was staggering to see how they left Demba Ba alone in that position, and the quality United have, it’s terrible that they did it.

‘I don’t know who played the pass to Ba, but he never had an easier pass, or Ba an easier goal, in their lives. It was a mistake you’d see in a kids game.

‘I could use stronger words to describe how bad this is, but everyone already knows this.’

Solskjaer had little explanation for why his team was so off the pace, saying: ‘The performance wasn’t good enough against a team that worked and ran and they hit us on the break a couple of times and scored two goals like sometimes you do in Europe when you don’t defend well enough.

‘Of course we picked a team to win the game. We hoped we had enough to create chances, we just didn’t. Emotions don’t matter – when you lose, well you can think to yourself how we feel after we lose, that’s not something we go out to do.’
